We are a newly formed student-run Timebank at the University of Pennsylvania. A Timebank is an alternative currency where you give time to get time. You help someone out, earn an hour, then exchange it for a service from anyone else in the network. Everyone’s hour is equal, and everyone has something to give, as the goal is to build a community based on reciprocity, where members help one another out.
If you like to volunteer, Timebanking is a way to get something back in exchange for your time. If you need help, the Timebank can be a place to go to find support. If you would like to meet new people, learn something new, or share a skill, Timebanking can connect you to others who are looking for the same thing.
Our goal is to create a circle of reciprocity for the campus community. We are excited by how alternative currencies can strengthen relationships and improve lives, and can’t wait to see how this plays out!
We would like to thank The Kelly Writer’s House for sponsoring this project, and the Hour Exchange Portland for providing us with free software and training.
